Dear Diane: This certainly needs to be lightened! This is an old recipe from England that was used to send a hearty meal with the men down into the mines. All that hard work burned off a lot of calories, but unless you're planning on doing hard labor, this many calories is more than many people need in a whole day. The pastry is really a pie crust. I tried using a pizza crust (like a calzone) and a biscuit crust. Both were good, but the biscuit crust was more like the original. It's still quite high in fat and calories, ...
