Lent has never been popular, even in the Church. People enjoy Christmas and harvest festivals and turn out in large numbers. At Easter, the pews are full but they don't care much for the season of Lent. The trouble is that Lent tests us and, when it come to religion, people don't like to be tested. Especially if they're afraid they'll fail the test.
Can you be faithful for 40 days when times are bad? It's hard enough supporting a football team when they're not doing well. It's easy when they're scoring goals and winning cups but ...
