FORT MYERS - Spring training is a lie. Spring? Ha! It is actually the cold, dead of winter when big league ballclubs roll out the baseballs and commence with the business of limbering up for another run at the pennant.
It certainly doesn't FEEL like spring . . . not when the sluggers are taking their practice cuts in hot, muggy weather . . . and not when pasty-legged fans back home are still cranking up the thermostat and writing out hefty checks to Nstar.
But no matter. While the term may be flawed, its very utterance - spring training - conjures up images of the summer ahead. Even to somebody with absolutely no interest ...
