Saddam takes tough line
The regime of President Saddam Hussain is once more in open conflict with Western powers, as the US prepared to deploy air force units in Saudi Arabia to back up demands for Baghdad to co-operate with UN inspection teams (see Regional Focus). The rise in tensions follows changes in domestic politics, in particular the removal of Saadoun Hammadi the man appointed prime minister after the war for Kuwait and a politician regarded as favouring reconciliation with the outside world.
