AS THE great scientist J. B. S. Haldane once remarked, the universe is not only stranger than we imagine; it is stranger than we can imagine.

And he was right. Far out among the twinkling points of light in the night sky are objects so weird they defy human comprehension. Black holes that can freeze time and gobble stars for breakfast.

Exploding suns that can, briefly, outshine the rest of creation, and vast planets where it rains molten iron.

But, surely, the universe does not get much stranger than a star the size of America made of solid diamond which has been discovered only because it rings like a bell.
