The shockwave felt at the European People's Party Congress which, under pressure from the CDU, the Partido Popular and Forza Italia, saw the traditional commitment to European federalism and the promotion of the social market economy cast into the oblivion of Christian Democratic history in favour of pro-sovereignty, pro-US and liberal agenda, in order to anchor the British Tories and other Eurosceptics from East European countries, is continuing to spread through the group chaired by Hans Gert Pottering (see European Report 2841 for further details).
