I've been lecturing on ostomy and wound care for more years than I care to contemplate at this point in my life. And, when I talk about wound healing, I tend to talk in terms of either traffic control or music. So, here is Part 1 of the Wound Healing Symphony.
Regardless of the extent of the injury, there are only two mechanisms by which wounds heal: (a) regeneration or the replacement of the damaged or lost tissue with more of the same, or (b) connective tissue repair, in which the dam aged tissue is replaced by scar tissue. Think of the two as the difference between buying a new, very expensive violin or fixing the old, very expensive violin.
