CHILDHOOD PHYSICAL and sexual abuse and substance use disorders are known to co-occur for many people, although the precise nature of the relationship has yet to be established empirically. The effects of abuse suffered as a child on later adult alcohol and drug problems were substantially reviewed in two recent works (Langeland and Hartgers, 1998; Simpson and Miller, 2002). Both reviews concluded there is evidence documenting the effects of childhood physical and sexual abuse on later alcohol problems for women, but insufficient research on male populations precludes any conclusions for abuse's effect on them.
