THE Filipino tourist felt cheated when he paid $5 for a meal of St. Peters fish in the Holy Land because he realized that although delicious, it was the lowly Tilapia he was served. It is called St. Peters fish because when Our Lord was asked to pay taxes he instructed Peter to fish. And in the mouth of the fish (Tilapia) caught Peter found the coin for the tax.
Tilapia (oreochromis niloticus) dates back not only to Our Lords time but many centuries before. It was a common fish in the Middle East and in many fresh-water lakes and rivers of Africa. Its survival advantage was and is its ability to multiply fast.
