An attempt by Major League Baseball and the players union to keep drug test results confidential reaches a critical juncture this week, when steroid test records on all big-league players come due under federal subpoenas issued in the BALCO steroid case.
A federal grand jury issued the subpoenas before February's 42-count indictment accusing four Bay Area men, including the personal trainer of Giants slugger Barry Bonds, of a scheme to illegally distribute designer steroids to elite athletes in football, baseball, and track and field.
