U-T merger causes staffers to brace for possible layoffs
Nearly 500 editorial staffers at The San Diego Union and the San Diego Tribune are bracing for possible layoffs following last week's announcement that the Tribune will cease independent operation early next year.
Helen Copley, publisher of the two papers, said the afternoon Tribune would be merged into the larger morning Union in January to create a single newspaper with a morning and afternoon edition. Copley, along with other Union-Tribune executives, attributed the action to the Tribune's continued circulation slide in the past several years.
