VERO BEACH, Fla. - A member of the Dodgers' front office once jokingly suggested that Adrian Beltre should be hypnotized and made to believe that every month is August.

That's just about the only thing the Dodgers haven't tried in an attempt to get Beltre to produce offensively in the first halves of seasons. Every year at this time, the Dodgers profess hope that Beltre will start hitting in April and never stop, and thus finally fulfill the potential he has displayed only in spurts.

Now, with Beltre eligible for free agency after this year, he has a final chance to show the Dodgers he can be their everyday ...
