It's Academy Awards time again, which means another Barbara Walters special, a run on limousines and taffeta, and another chance for the Greatest Awards Show on Earth to run longer than the Falklands War.
These days celebrating the Oscars has become a virtual cottage industry across the country. Film societies throw lavish parties; video stores have contests. Crazy people take to the streets to act out scenes from Braveheart. At least in my neighborhood they do.
When I was in high school the Oscars posed a dilemma: They were routinely held on Monday nights opposite the NCAA men's basketball championship. ...
