2004 JAN 12 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- West Virginia children suffering from mental health disorders must sometimes wait weeks or months to see specialists. Others see general psychiatrists or are sent out of state.
The lack of a state program to train child psychologists - amid a nationwide shortage of child psychiatrists - has made it more difficult to address children's specific mental health needs, some health officials say.
"We're not putting out child psychiatrists," said Betty Ann Smith, executive director of Family Services in Kanawha County, West Virginia. "We're not turning them out fast enough to keep up with case loads."
