THE threat of civil war in Iraq grew yesterday after the worst day of carnage since the US-led conflict ended.
Bombers killed at least 177 people in attacks on mosques in Baghdad and the city of Karbala as two million Shia muslims celebrated their holiest day.
Another bloodbath was averted in the southern city of Basra when police thwarted two attacks.
Shia muslims also came under attack yesterday in Pakistan, where 41 were killed and 150 injured.
