For decades the branch automation market has been dominated by the OS2 operating system from International Business Machines Corp.
But IBM's decision to phase out support for the product has opened the door to a techno-battle in the banking industry's aging branches, many of which are ripe for an refresh cycle.
In one corner is Microsoft Corp.'s Windows, which controls most of the desktops in almost every segment of business. Many banks might instinctively turn to Windows, since IBM has chosen to remove its champion from the ring.
