Roofers' compliance with OSHA regulations (1926.404) for ground-fault circuit interrupters and lock-out/tag-out programs reduced the 1995 electrical fatality rate from 19 percent (1995) to 17 percent (2001) and lost-work-time, non-fatal accidents from 11 percent (1995) to almost 7 percent (2001). While many of these accidents were due to employees contacting live conductors running near the roof, the root causes of a great many electrocutions were due to defective and damaged temporary lead cords and portable tools that the roofers brought with them.
