NEW YORK -- Early on in his business, it was the beach shack that kept Carmen Marc Valvo going.

Fifteen years later, it has been paid off and renovated many times over.

"When I started out, I had just bought a house in the Hamptons. When I found myself no longer gainfully employed, I was at risk of losing my dream house, which was really a shack," the designer said. "It was two weeks before market week, and I thought, `Who will pay me?' So I started my company that day, flew to the Orient, and called in a few favors. It was all about survival at that point. I probably wouldn't have done it if I weren't that afraid."
