Nearly all composers try their hand at requiems. Elgin symphony Orchestra conductor Robert Hanson says that's because, despite dark subject matter, requiems are universal in their expression of the deepest of all human subjects.
"We're all facing death," he said, but beyond that, requiems evoke redemption and, finally, the hope of eternal rest.
The ESO will perform one of the greatest requiems this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin.
