Mar. 5--Despite widespread skepticism over the feasibility of building a maglev rail line, several Los Angeles City Council members want the city to pay $563,000 to study a 55-mile-long high-speed system between West Los Angeles and Ontario Airport.
The three-member Transportation Committee, chaired by Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa, last week recommended that the City Council allocate the money to study a magnetic-levitation system, saying it could help reduce freeway congestion.
