2004 MAR 8 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Nebraska Governor Charles Thone tried it in 1980 but was rebuffed.

A task force in 1998 came close to recommending it, but backed off.

Now Governor Mike Johanns is giving it a go.

The governor is proposing closing the Hastings and Norfolk mental health treatment centers as part of a mental health reform plan that relies more heavily on community-based care. His plan is backed by the chairman of the Legislature's Health Committee and many mental health care advocacy groups.

Supporters say the reforms called for are badly needed.
