With Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide in exile, Haiti is at a crossroads. The island nation can move away from its failed past toward a more hopeful, prosperous future or remain stagnant, mired in abject poverty, political strife, violence, disease and utter despair. To help Haiti unshackle itself from decades of destitution, Haiti, the United States and the international community need to take several bold, radical steps.
