Toshiba and NEC lead a group that's touting HD-DVD (High-Definition DVD) as the next-generation successor to the immensely successful DVD. An HD-DVD disc holds up to 30GB compared to DVD's 4.75GB. Most importantly, HD-DVD players are compatible with existing DVDs. An HD-DVD can play a DVD so, in that sense, it's an upgrade to existing products.
"The consumer has a big DVD library. If the next generation of DVDs is different, then their current DVD library has no meaning," a Toshiba spokeswoman told the BBC. "The consumer will appreciate compatibility with current DVDs."
