SPARKLING REBOUND
Champagnes and sparkling wines in May took a sharp upturn but haven't been setting the world on fire in the U.S. lately, and the slow-down in sales is apparent in the United Kingdom as well.
The Gomberg-Fredrikson Report said (July 25) that California champagnes and sparkling wines rebounded 11% in May although sales to the market within the state dipped slightly. The gain came in shipments to other states and export markets -- up 20% for the month. Guild Wineries and Distilleries -- now part of Canandaigua in New York, reported a 39% jump in May.
