In our society, it is the women who make the majority of healthcare decisions for the family. So it would seem to be a natural progression to see significant numbers of women in health care jobs. Historically, women were absent from many of the numerous opportunities in medicine, but that has certainly changed over time, especially recently.

One of the biggest indicators of the evolution of women in medicine is enrollment in medical schools. According to the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), in 2003, women outnumbered male medical school applicants for the first time, ever.
