Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem Mass, first performed in 1874 on the first anniversary of the death of the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni, holds a rightful place among the greatest works in the choral-orchestral repertoire.
The Manzoni Requiem, as it's otherwise known, contains music of explosive drama and quiet repose, which led a few early critics to ridicule it as "church music in operatic costume," because its creator was the pre-eminent opera composer of the day.
