Platinum markets eye superpowers
Platinum markets are watching the Soviet Union and the United States.
Prospects for slower Soviet platinum sales, and renewed demand from both countries, will influence the markets in coming months. What happens to catalytic converters for automobiles will also drive prices.
"It's a strange time" for platinum, sums up John Phizabkerly, analyst at Shearson Lehman in New York.
"The Soviets have been selling enormous amounts," says Nina Lipton, researcher at Platinum Guild International in New York. Up to a year ago, she says, only one Soviet agency dealt platinum. Now several do.
