TUCSON -- Clint Barmes got the message during the winter.
The Colorado Rockies feel he has a future as a big-league shortstop and see him as a part of their long-range plan. But his future is not now.
That's hard to ignore when the team spends the off-season checking out veteran shortstops, making what they felt was a serious run at Rich Aurilia, having some discussions with Deivi Cruz, then deciding the best option for 2004 was Royce Clayton, a slick-fielding veteran.
Not that Barmes is complaining.
