Two medical articles published in August "put the final nails in the coffin" regarding the heart benefits of hormone replacement, according to cardiologist and NHW editor Douglas Zipes. Since estrogen increases bone mass, however, women may increase their risk for osteoporosis when they quit taking combination hormone therapy.

"Fortunately, it is not necessarily the end of the line if you cannot take estrogen," said Dr. Ronald Young, a Baylor University investigator involved in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study which found health risks associated with the use of estrogen and progestin. "There are many options for women to maintain their bone density."
