A southern California medical school has indefinitely suspended its body donor program amid a scandal over illegal cadaver sales.

The suspension Tuesday of the University of California-Los Angeles' program came during a court hearing in which lawyers for relatives of cadaver donors tried to close the program.

Earlier, the school had contended closing the program, the oldest in the nation, would hurt medical education and research, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

But officials abandoned that position as disclosures mounted about the scope of the scandal.
