Article: Sierra Leone war crimes court opens.

The U.N.-backed war crimes court for Sierra Leone was inaugurated Wednesday to try those accused of the decade-long war that killed thousands.

"This is a special court for Sierra Leone, a symbol of the rule of law and an essential element in the pursuit of peace, justice and national reconciliation" President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah said at the opening ceremony.

The court was set up under a treaty, signed in 2002, between the government and the United Nations to try those behind the atrocities that killed some 200,000 people. The war civil ended in 2001.
