When it comes to the goofy world of Gilbert and Sullivan, funnyman Frederick Reeder plays it straight.

"A lot of American companies try to camp up Gilbert and Sullivan," says the 53-year-old director of the Eugene Opera's production of ``HMS Pinafore'' (being performed Friday and next Sunday).

``I don't know that that's possible because the original concept was camp. To do that is kind of missing the whole point.''

The point, Reeder insists, is to have fun. But don't expect him to wring every last laugh out of the nautical nonsense by going overboard with schtick.
