DETROIT _ With a monocle wedged over one eye and a thin cane held like a wand in his hand, James McNeill Whistler peers with unflinching conceit in a portrait by one of his most famous colleagues.
The flattering work painted about 120 years ago by William Merritt Chase captures the essence of Whistler's outspoken character and casts a larger-than-life shadow in "American Attitude: Whistler & His Followers," the eagerly awaited stellar exhibit opening March 14 at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
