The demand for vegetable oil is on the rise in Vietnam, and local producers are taking major steps to fend off competition from high quality imported brands.

According to a report released by Vietnams Vegetable Oil Research Institute, per capita consumption of that product rose from 0.7 kilogram in 1996 to 5 kilograms in 2003, but there is still considerable growth on the horizon. The Institute projects that per capita vegetable oil consumption will reach 8 kilograms by 2008.
