In many states, Native Americans have hunting and fishing rights from treaties signed more than a century ago. But in several places, state agencies are beginning to assert that such rights are infringing on their ability to manage game herds. Complicating the issue is an interest by some Native Americans in hunting in national parks, lands generally considered wildlife sanctuaries. Conflicts of this sort are brewing both in the U.S. and in Canada, but action by the state of Michigan has recently brought the issue into focus.
