I read with great interest your articles on "The Explorers" [February 23-March 1]. "Island Hopping to a New World" and "Did You Know?" on Page 58, dealing with Bjarni Herjolfsson, struck a chord that history has been, until now, written mostly by the victors. There is evidence that the Norse were not the first Europeans of the modern era to have explored, settled, or traded with indigenous peoples of North America. Farley Mowat, in his book The Farfarers: Before the Norse, outlines the dispersal of Europeans who inhabited the continent prior to the arrival of the Celts.
