Every other day, Dr. Hennekens takes a little red capsule that contains beta-carotene. Along with 22,071 colleagues, he is participating in the Physician's Health Study. What sets Charles Hennekens, M.D., apart from the others, is that he is the designer and chief investigator of the study.
Since 1982, the Physician Health Study has involved male physicians between ages 40 and 84, looking at the effects of aspirin and beta-carotene on the risk of heart disease and cancer.
Preliminary findings from those taking 50 milligrams beta-carotene every other day unexpectedly suggested that eating foods rich in this nutrient may help prevent heart disease. (See ...
