Must employers compensate salaried employees for overtime? In many circumstances, yes. Employees who don't fall into an exempt category, and many do not, are entitled to receive overtime pay whether or not they were hired on a salary or hourly basis. Often employers mistakenly label an employee as a "salaried employee", regardless of hours worked, in order to avoid paying overtime. Employers also frequently misclassify their employees as "exempt" to bypass the overtime requirements.
