Many tools and techniques contribute to our increased understanding of how severe storms form and evolve. Shortly after World War II, it was recognized that a well calibrated radar could measure the strength of thunderstorms. This is accomplished by transmitting a short pulse of electromagnetic energy and "listening" to the small fraction of energy scattered back to the radar by the storm. The strength of the returned signal is an indication of the rain's intensity and the possible presence of hail.
