The plans were bold for these lovers of Ireland.
An army and materiel would be raised, troops would be mustered along the border and ultimately an invasion would be launched in three waves.
The target: Canada.
The goal in the summer of 1866: to capture and hold the country hostage until the British agreed to withdraw and grant Ireland its freedom.
The plan was hatched within a secret society called the Fenians, a revolutionary organization that drew its name from Fianna, an ancient and legendary band of Irish warriors. The Fenians existed in both Ireland and the United States.
