Henri Alain-Fournier, who died tragically in WWI, wrote only one novel. His account of adolescents at school in a small French village in 1890 is a work of perception and poetry. The story is narrated by 15-year-old Francois Seurel, whose father runs the local school. A boarder named Augustin Meaulnes, the only son of a widow, joins them.
