National Fisherman published a Dock Talk article in its January 2004 issue by Dave Gelfman that inaccurately characterizes the status of the Atlantic herring resource and its commercial fishery ["The perils of midwater-trawling," page 8]. Unfortunately, this article leaves readers with numerous misconceptions.
The herring fishery has a century-old tradition in New England, with current landings on par with landings of the early '60s. The resource is utilized in canned sardines, frozen whole for food consumption, and as bait by a highly dependent and successful lobster fishery in the Gulf of Maine.
