Brazil's president said Thursday he will not succumb to the discontent of ex-employees of the country's bingo halls -- believed to have been money-laundering havens -- by reopening them.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that he could not reopen the gambling halls in good conscience even though his decision put hundreds of thousands of people out of work. He said to do so would be sanctioning organized crime and money laundering, and then "tomorrow, they can ask me to legalize child prostitution."

"Don't ask me to do illegal things," he added.
