Mar. 16--A decision by Smith County commissioners on Monday to cut a proposed tax abatement investment amount by almost half was made at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s request because that was the only amount estimated for expenditure thus far, a company official said.
In February, commissioners approved a four-year abatement for $21 million in capital investment. Abated taxes under the original agreement totaled $154,672.
But Goodyear was not ready to spend $21 million that quickly in its effort to retool to make larger tires.
