The European Union used a three-day conference in Paris, France, last month to press its case on the need for enforceable international standards on animal welfare--a push likely to create some disquiet among livestock industries around the globe.
The conference, organized by the Office International des Epizooties (OIE), brought together some 450 participants from more than 70 countries to discuss the development of international standards for dealing with animals.
