THE cover of Richard Fortey's new book The Earth: An Intimate History shows what appears to be a pair of knees stretching into thighs lying on a pebbly beach.
The photograph, taken from Bill Brandt's archives, suggests the geometric similarities between man and world: the smooth grainy surfaces of skin and stone, their shapely lines, the shadows falling on their various intersections.
