Strange as it may seem, in many countries a stroll among the caged and perhaps rather depressed beasts of the local zoo still ranks as the most popular of leisure pursuits.
In 1995 some 600 million people walked the paths of the world's 1,100 zoos, gazing at captured animals.
In Germany zoological gardens regularly receive more visitors than museums, theatres or sporting events. And the last time anyone counted, zoo attendance figures were triple those of libraries in Canada.
