TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP,Reuters) - Taiwans ruling party claimed President Chen Shui-bian won a tight election yesterday, a day after he survived an assassination attempt, boosted by a historic referendum about rival Chinas military threat that energized his supporters but rankled Beijing.

President Chen won re-election by the narrowest margin in the islands history, just 50,000 votes, a senior official in Chens Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said, according to Reuters.
