JOHN MAGNIER, the Irish bloodstock magnate who created the Coolmore empire, missed the chance of owning triple Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate by a matter of hours.
Had Magnier succeeded in buying the horse when dealer Tom Costello put him up for sale exactly five years ago tomorrow, he would have wound up owning two of the most successful racehorses of recent years in Best Mate and Rock Of Gibraltar.
Paul Shanahan, a key member of Magnier's team, was on his way to buy Best Mate but Henrietta Knight - whose joy as Best Mate completed his treble on Thursday lit up Cheltenham - beat Shanahan to the deal.
