About 10 years ago, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory physicists conceived of an experiment with mysterious fundamental particles called neutrinos.
Although theorized in the 1930s, their existence wasn't proven until 1962. And even then, little was known.
While the sun constantly bathes us in these particles, scientists have been mystified how neutrinos often disappear during long journeys.
To explain this disappearing act, theorists thought they had no mass until 1998, when physicists in Japan brought forth surprising data that indicated otherwise.
